Sr. Leonella Consolata Medical College achieved another major milestone on expansion of training. This is after graduating the pioneer class of Renal Nurses.

The 35th Graduation ceremony which was presided over by NHIF Chairman, Eng. Michael S. M. Kamau, CBS, HSC saw graduations of Higher diplomas, Diplomas and Certificates holder. In his speech, he congratulated as they start their career journey. He hailed Sister Leonella Consolata Medical College for graduating its first cohorts of Renal Nurses.

Who are Renal Nurses?

These are Nurses who specialize in Nephrology Nursing. This is a one (1) year Higher Diploma program. The requirements for this programme are BScN, KRCHN/KRN/MPH/KRNM and 2 years of Clinical Experience. The intakes are in March of every year.

Why Nephrology Nursing?

Recognition of kidney disease, acute and chronic, as a major health problem, has led to the development of nephrology nursing as a specialty. Nephrology nurses who work in a team-oriented environment to care for patients who are experience or are at risk of developing kidney derangements. This program therefore aims to Nephrology Nurses with competences to enable them be direct caregivers, medical educators, administrators and researchers.

Nephrology Nursing Funding opportunities

Given the acute shortage of Nephrology Nurses in Kenya just like other specialized nursing programs, the Higher Educations Loans board (HELB) in partnership with Johnson and Johnson (J&J) Foundation has rolled out a special scheme to fund specialized nursing programs including Nephrology Nursing. The funding is offered as a loan to salaried and non-salaried students who will be expected to repay the amount borrowed after completion of the program.
