Archdiocese of Nyeri, September 01, 2026 - The Archdiocese of Nyeri has taken a landmark step toward a greener future with the groundbreaking of the Green Hydrogen Innovations Centre (GHIC) at Nyeri Hill Farm. The ceremony was presided over by His Grace Archbishop Anthony Muheria, shepherd of the Archdiocese of Nyeri and, closer to home for us, Chairman of the Board of Sister Leonella Consolata Medical College (SLCMC).

The event drew a strong delegation of government officials, development partners, and academic leaders, all voicing support for the project. Mr. Henry Kinyua of UNIDO Kenya's ACT Programme praised Hill Farm's scale and industrial discipline as ideal for hosting such an ambitious initiative, while Ms. Yvonne Mathenge, representing the Governor of Nyeri County, commended the Archdiocese for a project set to benefit the wider community.

Mr. Ali Mohamed, Special Envoy for Climate Change in the Executive Office of the President, underscored the urgency of climate action and lauded the Archdiocese's concrete steps toward sustainability. Germany's Deputy Ambassador, H.E. Konrad Lax, called the initiative a demonstration of Kenya's commitment to food security and green innovation, describing Nyeri Hill Farm as "a pillar of the community" and stressing that the project is ultimately about people, not just technology.

Dedan Kimathi University of Technology's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eng. Peter Muchiri, welcomed the University's new partnership with the Archdiocese, highlighting opportunities it will create for student learning, research, and skills development. Hon. Alex Wachira, Principal Secretary for Energy, described the milestone as moving Kenya's Green Hydrogen agenda from policy into action.

In his remarks, Archbishop Muheria called the groundbreaking a testimony to the solidarity and collaboration of the many partners involved, and paid tribute to Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato Si' as a guiding inspiration for the Church's environmental responsibility. He thanked all partners for their trust and support, declaring:

"We start a long journey that is worth undertaking for the sake of Mother Earth and for the sake of God."
